The F-2A is in special 60th anniversary (of the JASDF) colors with the beautiful cherry blossoms as the central theme. The cherry blossom is very special in the Japanese tradition. (photo 5781-1).

The Mitsubishi F-2 (nickname: ‘Viper Zero’) is a 4.5th generation multirole fighter manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and Lockheed Martin for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force, with a 60/40 split in manufacturing between Japan and the USA. It is based on the General Dynamics (later Lockheed Martin) F-16 and uses the wing design of the F-16 Agile Falcon proposal.

The F-2’s maiden flight was on 7 October 1995. At this time it was the first combat aircraft with an AESA (Active electronically scanned array radar), the J/APG-1. Production started in 1996 and the first aircraft entered service in 2000. Originally 141 aircraft were ordered, this number was later (2004) reduced to 98 (including four prototypes). The last of 94 production aircraft ordered was delivered on 27 September 2011. As of 2014 there are 61 single-seaters flying, and 21 two-seat trainers.
